Fort Constitution is the Revolutionary War fortification begun in 1775 on Constitution Island, directly across the Hudson from West Point. Named for the English constitution as colonists laid claim to their rights, it was among the first river forts the Americans attempted; later the famous Great Chain was stretched from West Point to the island to block British warships. The island is now West Point property, and the site is best experienced on a tour through the Constitution Island Association.
